Artist Statement
Inspired by our formulaic understanding of energy, that being, equal to "mass times the speed of light squared", this series was created as a means of depicting a point of emergence from one state of matter into another. Envisioning a state of "in-betweenness", captured between form and formlessness, structure and fluidity, order and chaos, each frame in this series is depicted as a transformative burst of creation emerging from the void. Exploring the concept of quantum entanglement, each frame is portrayed as visually connecting to and branching off from one another. Through the use of color and form, I create a visual dialogue between each frame, implying a relationship between varying locations, regardless of the physical space between them. Indicating an inherent connectivity between particles at often great distances from one another, the viewer is invited to consider their own position of perceived singularity, and how they may also be simultaneously connected to the world around them, entangled in a dualistic nature of harmony and dissonance. Depicting different locations around the GTA, each scene is captured photographically with a variety of different angles and methods, documenting some frames in sharp focus, while others use a combination of softer focus, physical camera movement, light painting and distortion. Collaging and combining these images together, illustrative techniques are then further employed, a process known as photo-illustration, in order to depict this realistic surrealistic suggestion of reality.
